As part of a new workplace benefit, Memphis will become the first city in the nation to help its employees tackle student debt.

The city on Thursday announced it will contribute $50 a month to the student loan account of any employee who has worked for the city for at least a year. The benefit, which will be managed by administrator, will kick in July 1.
