The long-standing tradition of job boards, or the “post and pray” strategy, has always been a source of anxiety for employers. While job boards can provide amazing leads on new candidates, times have changed. The experts at Glassdoor know today’s job boards are more about posting with a purpose, letting you run targeted job campaigns and influence candidates who may be unaware of your employer brand. Here are some tips to get the best bang for your buck.

An unclear title

Do you wonder why nobody is clicking on your posts? It could be that the very first thing a candidate sees is failing … the title. Straightforward job titles like “Software Engineer” and “Web Developer” work well, Gassdoor advises. “You can always add more color inside the job description. The purpose of the job title is to make it easily searchable.”

The basics

Every posting must have the basic building blocks, Glassdoor notes, including:

•tJob title
•tLocation
•tDetails about the role
•tResponsibilities
•tRequirements
•tNext steps to apply

Misleading

If a wave of applicants is littered with a majority of unqualified candidates, employers might want to double check the full description. Quality over quantity will help employers save time during the recruitment process, and Glassdoor has a job description checklist to ensure all bases are covered. A few include:

•tTailor your company’s mission to the job
•tAvoid lengthy paragraphs: remember, people like to skim!
•tIllustrate your company’s perks

A broken process

What’s worse than spending time and resources on the whole process, only to have the offers being turned down? If this is happening, Glassdoor recommends taking a step back and asking these questions: What is your competition doing? Do you have a clearly defined employer brand? Are there changes needed in your process?

Setting expectations

No one likes buyer’s remorse, and 61% of employees say the realities of a new job differ from expectations set during the interview process. Glassdoor says to ensure candidates have the right expectations before setting foot inside your organization and to give them a realistic preview of what the job entails and what it’s like inside the organization.
