Overview

Proposed rate increases from insurers and a speech by HHS Secretary Burwell spurred plenty of discussion about the Affordable Care Act this week. Here’s what EBA readers had to say about the health care law.

‘Health care being flushed down the sewer’

“Our health care is being flushed down the sewer. Any time the feds get involved, disaster is not far behind. We've already seen what they've done with Medicare and Medicaid. We don't need a third strike to impact the rest of us.”

Get out and vote

“We need to remember what is occurring at election time. We need to support the candidates that can reverse these inroads made by the White House and its minions, make our voices heard, and encouraged our relatives, friends and clients to vote.”

‘Government run amok’

“Obamacare is government run amok. It should be replaced by a streamlined interim system until Congress has a leader and a Congress that can agree and the ultimate system is supported by 70% of Americans who must pay for it.”

Government overreach

“Well, whoever said that the ACA was a legitimate solution? While some are just going along with it because it is the ‘law of the land,’ the ACA is still a ‘socialist overreach’ in areas they have no business being in!”

Rising costs no surprise

“If anyone thought costs were going to down w/ACA, they were either an idiot or a Democrat. Oh wait.”

How to pay for the ACA?

“So as these ACA exchange plans receive larger than expected rate increases, where will the money come from for the larger than expected subsidy cost? I guess the options are; print it, borrow it, raise taxes, or cut other programs. This is just the tip of the iceberg for the financial issues we will be having in the coming years with this program.”

Give the ACA the heave-ho

“These increases will start to reflect the actual premium costs and it is about time they did. Every state exchange is failing due to cost overruns, ineptitude and lack of enrollment. Obamacare has ruined the insurance and health care markets under the guise of ‘helping.’

“Unfortunately, the only ones really helped were the Democrats and the special interest groups who wrote the law. Get rid of this useless massive entitlement program and let the markets function. It is the only way to lower costs and improve care and access to care.”
