I’m the proud relative of two army veterans, so Memorial Day always has had a special meaning for me. Although like many of us, I happily partake in the cookouts and celebrations the holiday brings each year, I always try to keep the reason for the holiday close to heart.
To do honor to our fallen and current servicepeople – and of course, to prevent running afoul of the law – I wanted to take a moment before the start of this holiday weekend to revisit employers’ responsibilities under the HEART Act (the Heroes Earnings Assistance and Relief Tax Act of 2008), which requires you to provide certain retirement and welfare benefits for returning military personnel and their beneficiaries.
