Tip of the Day: Get aware and get active in the fight against diabetes

Soon, many of us will be sneaking snacks from our kids’ Halloween bags. Ironically, the day after youngsters make their annual candy haul is the start of American Diabetes Awareness Month.

The yearly national campaign against diabetes runs Nov. 1—30. It’s worth acknowledging, because someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with diabetes every 30 seconds and 23.6 million people currently suffer from the illness — and there’s no doubt many of them are among your employee population.

You’ve heard countless times the statistics about diabetes and its correlation to higher health care costs, so I won’t repeat them here. Instead, I’ll just offer a friendly reminder to plan a wellness event around Diabetes Awareness Month this year, so that your employees don’t have to contribute to those statistics.
