Overview

There was a lot of federal action this week concerning the insurance industry. The Supreme Court ruled to uphold ACA subsidies and the Senate introduced two bills, one aimed to give brokers equal access to marketplace enrollment information and another to separate commissions from MLR requirements.

Here’s what EBA readers had to say:

‘This ruling will not make the law work’

“What does Roberts think the imposition of Obamacare did to the health markets in the first place if it was not to disrupt them? This ruling will not make the law work, will not make it more popular, and hopefully will make people mad enough to demand its demise. If not, then they will get what they deserve, third-world bureaucrats and third-world care.”

‘Absolute disgrace’

“An absolute disgrace! The Supreme Court should be immune from political influence and public opinion polls. This is why they are appointed for life. The law was clear, and they've chosen to ignore it. This is a great victory for Dems who cannot write clear legislation and a president who oversteps his constitutional bounds at every turn. But then again, what can you expect from a bunch of lawyers?

Stocks up, employers stuck

“Hospital stocks up big today on this news. Insurance carrier stocks have been sky high for a while now. Employers are stuck with the Obamacare taxes, coverage rules and reporting. I guess we know who the real winners and losers are from today’s Supreme Court ruling.”

Another Chief mistake

“Once again, Justice Roberts has shown that he cannot read and understand the English language. He should be ashamed of himself.”

Right ruling

“The court got it right. Forget about the politics. … It's time to move on.”

“You have to take the entire law into context and, when you do, you see the law is providing tax subsidies to anyone that qualifies for them when purchasing insurance through an exchange (whether federal or state). Yes, the law needs work to improve upon it, but Congress needs to get to work making those improvements already instead of continuing to challenge the ideology of the law.”

Political decision

“This is truly shameful and a terrible comment on the objectivity of the Supreme Court. The wording was absolutely clear and so was the intent. I guess all of us can now ignore the exact wording of laws and just interpret them to mean whatever works out best for us.”

A ‘great help’

“This a great help for those who have pre-existing conditions who were denied coverage for over 100 conditions including the fastest growing one, diabetes. Self-employed are no longer discriminated against.

“It's not the best law, I see things I don't like, but overall it is a positive for the American people who were uninsured or uninsurable.”

Senate bill lauded

“Small Business supports all Americans. The Fed has been so interested in carving out ACA rules which give taxpayer paid employees of the Fed (navigators and assisters) significant advantage over agents; that it has compromised the stated goals of federal program.”
