Best — and worst — states for LGBTQ employees

Supreme Court Issues Orders And Releases Opinions

When it comes to offering workplaces that work for and support LGBTQ employees, certain states fare better than others.

In order to better determine the best environments for queer employees, Adzuna, a global search engine company, analyzed U.S. states and sectors in depth to look at inclusivity across the nation, as well as job ads that specifically emphasize that job seekers of all sexual orientations are encouraged to apply, according to a press release.

Discrimnation often starts well before employees are through the door, the research found. With not enough position postings catering to LGBTQ job seekers, recruiting and hiring practices need an overhaul.

“Only a quarter of U.S. job ads actively show support for the LGBTQ community, meaning much more needs to be done to support diverse hiring and encourage equality,” Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said in a press release. “Encouraging a culturally rich workforce by supporting different diverse groups into jobs is crucial to strive towards wider equality.”

Three in four lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer employees experienced at least one negative interaction at work related to their sexual orientation or gender identity in the last year, according to a 2020 study by the Boston Consulting Group and New York City’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center.

“Jobseekers are becoming more discerning and are increasingly looking for statements of support for minority groups when applying for roles,” Hunter said. “Broadening the talent pool is also a great way to bring different perspectives and ideas to a company.”

For LGBTQ job applicants, Seattle ranked the top spot, with half of their job postings incorporating inclusive language. The city beat out other progressive cities like San Francisco, New York and Chicago. Nebraska took the bottom spot, with less than one-quarter of their job postings mentioning LGBTQ. Adzuna shared a more comprehensive list of the states with the most — and least — inclusive postings for queer employees:
