Recognizing companies with the best 401(k) plans with more than $1 billion in assets, BrightScope has compiled a year-end ranking of the top 401(k) plans, based on factors such as total plan costs, company generosity, salary deferrals and account balances.

#10. Exxon Mobil
Headquartered in Houston, Texas, the Exxonmobil Savings Plan currently has more than 44,000 active participants and $23.8 billion in plan assets. It is a defined contribution plan with a profit-sharing component, stock bonus component, 401(k) feature, and ESOP component and ranks in the top 15% of all plans in its peer group.
#9. Bayer
Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa., the Bayer Corporation Savings and Retirement Plan is a defined contribution plan with a profit-sharing component and 401(k) feature. It currently has more than 21,700 active participants and $4.7 billion in plan assets. The plan is in the top 15% of plans for account balances, company generosity, participation rate, salary deferral, and total plan cost.

Based in Houston, Texas, the ConocoPhillips Savings Plan has more than 20,900 active participants and $7.9 billion in plan assets. It is a DC plan with a profit-sharing component, stock bonus component, 401k feature, ESOP component, and leveraged ESOP component.
#7. United Parcel Service
Headquartered in Louisville, Ky., the UPS/Ipa Defined Contribution Money Purchase Pension Plan is a DC plan with more than 2,700 active participants and $1.2 billion in plan assets.
#6. Amgen
Based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., the Amgen Retirement and Savings Plan has more than 16,100 active participants and $3.9 billion in plan assets. It is DC plan with a profit-sharing component, 401(k) feature, and ESOP component.

The Stamford, Conn.,-based Employee Savings & Stock Ownership Plan of General Re Corporation and Its Domestic Subsidiaries is a defined contribution plan with a 401(k) feature and leveraged ESOP component. The plan and its domestic subsidiaries currently have more than 2,200 active participants and $1.2 billion in plan assets.

Based in Boston, Mass., the Wellington Retirement and Pension Plan currently has more than 3,200 active participants and $1.5 billion in plan assets. The plan is a DC plan with a profit-sharing component and 401(k) feature.

The Savings Plan of Saudi Arabian Oil Company, based in Houston, Texas, is a defined contribution plan with a profit-sharing component and 401(k) feature. The plan has more than 3,800 active participants and $1.8 billion in plan assets.

Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, the Southwest Airlines Pilots Retirement Savings Plan is a defined contribution plan with a profit-sharing component and 401(k) feature. The plan currently has more than 7,000 participants with $2.8 billion in plan assets.

Based in Baltimore, Md., the NFL Player Second Career Savings Plan is the highest rated retirement plan of its peer group. The plan is a defined contribution plan with a profit-sharing component and 401(k) feature, with more than 7,700 active participants and $1.3 billion in plan assets.
