Paralyzed both by fears about the economy and long-known saving malaise, workers still aren’t saving adequately for retirement. They’re aware that their fear and inertia are harming their retirement futures, but feel powerless to stop the damage.
“Workers are falling further behind, and they know it,” says Mathew Greenwald of Greenwald & Associates, which conducted and co-sponsored the annual Retirement Confidence Survey with the Employee Benefit Research Institute, released in March. “An increased number are planning on working longer, but many retirees have told us they were forced to retire because of poor health.”
