Tip of the Day: Compliance considerations for hiring summer interns

EBN has an intern for the summer, and although I'm tempted occasionally to ask her to take down my Starbucks order and forward my constantly ringing phone to her desk, I don't -- for two reasons.

One, I've had that kind of internship experience and would never wish it on anyone -- let alone someone as nice and talented as our dear intern. I genuinely want her to have a rewarding and educational experience that she can use as a building block for her career.

And second, if anyone at DOL ever found out I had her fetching lattes and answering my phone, I'd be in a heap of trouble. As Associate Editor Kathleen Koster reports in this month's EBN, hiring interns -- although a great way to find low-cost, high-energy talent -- comes with a lot of responsibility.
