Budgetary issues have “sucked out all the energy” on Capitol Hill and at federal agencies, preventing critical work on retirement issues from being achieved, said the chairman of an influential Washington law group Monday at the 2013 SPARK National Conference.
Stephen M. Saxon, chairman of the Groom Law Group, said little is getting done in the capital city because of the mandated government budget cuts known as sequestration. “The fact that we have sequestration and all these budget issues signified the inability of those of us in Washington to deal with key issues facing the American people. And it’s terribly unfortunate,” he said.
He has personally talked with numerous government employees in Washington and some say it is a matter of “personal embarrassment,” he said. “They have an important job to fulfill and the fact that we can’t resolve these issues and can’t work on [them] every day is not a good thing. They wish as all of us do that we could get beyond this.”
Simply put, he explained, the people his law group deals with on a daily basis are not there every day due to mandatory furloughs.
