As the deputy general counsel and chief privacy officer at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Tena Roberson is responsible for the strategic oversight and administration of the company's legal division and the HIPAA privacy office.A health care executive for over 15 years, Roberson combines the analytical skills, legal expertise and hands-on knowledge needed to effectively direct a staff of 75 legal and privacy professionals. She has helped position BlueCross legal division as a model of efficiency, professionalism and bottom line results.While executing the interpretation and implementation of the HIPAA privacy regulations, Roberson successfully led cross-divisional, cross-functional teams to ensure that established timelines, milestones and goals were met.Roberson has presented information and shared best practices across the state of Tennessee regarding her privacy expertise. She has lectured on HIPAA privacy at the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC) Annual Quality Summit; on leadership development challenges for corporate law departments at the Annual American Corporate Counsel Meeting; and on privacy and security issues at a 2008 Capitol Hill health policy briefing.Prior to joining BlueCross, Roberson practiced litigation for an insurance defense law firm, with an emphasis in civil litigation. She has been practicing law for over 20 years.Roberson received her law degree from George C. Taylor College of Law in Knoxville, Tenn. She served as a member of the URAC Privacy and Security Accreditation Committee from 2003-2008. Her organizations and affiliations include the International Association of Privacy Professionals, Association of Corporate Counsel, Tennessee Bar Association, American Bar Association and the Chattanooga Bar Association.
