Would you take a job for its VTO?

From revised parental leave policies to so-called "soft Fridays" where staff can clock off early as long as they've completed all of their tasks for the week, employee wellbeing in the workplace is now a top priority.

Companies across the country are thinking up new ways to show their staff they care and while some measures including mental health app subscriptions simply pay lip service to facilitating positive wellbeing outcomes, a new study has found that volunteering can have a beneficial effect.

Not only does volunteering nurture a sense of belonging and community, it also helps develop coping skills, such as feeling supported during stressful periods.

It has even been found to have a positive ripple effect on business results and can help boost company reputation.

Giving back
It's estimated that approximately two-thirds of U.S. companies offer paid time off to staff to volunteer.

While the average amount of time off is estimated to be two and a half days or 20 hours per year, tech company Crunchbase allows its employees to take 32 hours annually to volunteer.

Crunchbase has also experienced an increase in the amount of time employees have spent volunteering. Crunchbase also helps match its staff with the right volunteering opportunities and in the past these have included mentorship programs, gift drives around the holidays and working with educational organizations.

Similarly, AppDynamics gives its employees five days VTO and also has a community-focused approach, while healthcare company McKesson supports giving back through its Matching Gifts program which gives up to $2,500 per employee and its community days.

Best foot forward
If the company you are working for has caring or giving back as one of its core values but doesn't currently facilitate VTO, you could always make your case and see if you can get support from the leadership team to implement a company-wide strategy.

However, if your company isn't fostering meaningful wellbeing initiatives or isn't committed to giving back, it could be time to weigh up your options.

If that is the case, make the Employee Benefit News Job Board your first port of call. It features thousands of roles in companies actively hiring, including the three below.
