Want to get out of PPACA compliance? Offer a mini-med plan.

So, it sounds like some of those folks who bemoaned the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as the death knell of mini-med plans needn’t have worried so much.

Because it sounds like all you have to do to escape complying with the reform provision that bars annual limits on health coverage is: A. Offer a mini-med plan and B. Apply for a waiver freeing your plan from coverage limits.

It seems the waivers are being handed out fast and loose by the Health and Human Services Department. As of Dec. 10, HHS had approved a total of 733 waivers, Business Insurance reported last week. That number is way, way up from the 30 or so waivers reported last October.

From 30 to 733 in just two months? If only all of government worked that swiftly.

Since President Obama has said he’s open to “tweaking” health care reform, perhaps he might start with the prohibition on annual limits? Seems he’s done plenty of tweaking to that provision already.
