Amid high unemployment, employers suffering from ‘arrogance of supply,’ expert says

Whether you believe the latest jobs report or not, the bottom line is there are a lot of Americans out of work. And while it’s true that a mismatch of jobs and candidates with the skills to do those jobs, it’s also true, staffing experts say, that employers have gotten a wee too picky.

Yes, it’s crucial to do adequate due diligence to make the right hire. Of course. But as they’ve seen more and more applicants per one opening, employers are beginning to suffer from an “arrogance of supply,” according to Rusty Rueff, a career expert with Glassdoor.com. Speaking to “Today” online, Rueff said, “[Employers have] become pickier and pickier and pickier … to a fault in some cases.”

Ioana Elena Marinescu, assistant professor of economics at the University of Chicago and has spent several years working with CareerBuilder, concurred, telling “Today,” “Some employers seem to feel that because the labor market is the way it is, all of a sudden they can be super demanding,” she said, adding that employers are increasingly crafting narrow job descriptions that a scant few applicants will be fully qualified for, and subjecting candidates to so many interviews and tests that more sought-after talent will simply cut bait and move on to accept another position.

Interesting.

So, what do you think? When it comes to hiring, are you too diligent, too demanding or a good mix of both? Share your thoughts in the comments.
