How these 9 benefits leaders are keeping themselves busy during quarantine

Employee Hobbies Quarantine 2021

Employers have recognized the need to help employees maintain their mental health during the COVID-19 crisis. As such, they have updated and expanded their benefits to support workers as they navigate the pandemic.

While employer- provided benefits are a huge help, it is also important for employees to take initiative and be proactive about their mental health. One way to improve mental well-being and alleviate stress is by learning a new hobby. Indeed, over one-third of Americans have picked up at least one new hobby during the pandemic, according to a poll by MixBook, a photo design company. Ninety-four percent of those surveyed said their new hobby helped their mental health.

Some of the top hobbies Americans have taken up during the pandemic include cooking and baking (63%) and playing video games (41%). A quarter of respondents have gotten into hiking or started to paint and draw, and 28% have picked up new meditation habits, according to the survey.

“Having a hobby is a great way to spend your spare time and unwind from your daily routine ,” according to a blog by Connect Health & Community, a not-for-profit community health service in Australia. “Spending time on activities that you enjoy can help improve your mental health and well-being. Research shows that people with hobbies are less likely to suffer from low moods, stress and depression.”

We've expanded our cooking palate and skills over this quarantine period and have gotten our 13 and 10-year-old boys involved. Our favorite new recipe is a chicken sausage and kale soup. We've been laughing because I am continually lecturing my kids on how to safely use a sharp knife and I've cut myself twice in the process.

A fun new activity I picked up while quarantining was getting more time on my Peloton bike. While I enjoyed the guilty pleasure of learning more about wine, it was important to me to focus on self-care.

I spent a lot of the past year remodeling my house and learned how to drywall, build a retaining wall and do a few other things. I don't know if I'll ever use those skills again, but it's nice to be able to do it if I ever need them.

My wife is a pilates instructor and has a professional studio inside our home. Once our regular gym shut down, she went from being my wife to being my trainer. Sounds convenient, but it was painful. I was up at 5am every morning and put on the reformer. It was like waking up and playing Twister for an hour! The plus side is that it significantly improved my golf swing and mobility — notice how I didn't say golf score — yes, still terrible.
