The average 401(k) balance reached its highest-ever at $75,900 at the end of the third quarter, Fidelity Investments, one of the nation’s largest 401(k) providers, reported last week. This is the highest average balance since Fidelity first started tracking it in 2000 and represents a 4.2% increase from the previous quarter and an 18% increase over last year.

Along with the rising average balance, Fidelity also found that employer contributions are rising faster than employee contributions.
