A trio of leaders of talent and HR solutions at Buck Consultants’ Chicago, Boston and New York offices have gazed into their collective crystal balls and come up with 10 predictions for the future. Mobile and game mechanics will be big, they say. What else do they predict? We offer you five glimpses into the future today, with five more in a new slideshow on Thursday. The future can only come so fast.

1. Mobile will be the platform of the future

Perhaps not the sole platform (at least in the near term — there will still be tasks better suited for more traditional desktop/browser interfaces) but we will get better and better at deploying complex apps, sophisticated functions and processes into hand-held devices. This will also continue to have significant impact on the worker of the future (e.g., increased mobility/functionality, extended working hours/locations, increased stress).

2. Game mechanics will get increasingly embedded

Whereas gaming is currently a work novelty, in the next couple of decades it will become an intrinsic part of how HR functions, Buck consultants say, not only for employee engagement, but also as it integrates with work processes.

3. Watch out for big data

Big data will help us better predict workforce supply and demand globally, while at the same time helping us hyper-personalize messaging to drive ideal behaviors.

4. Wolf at the door

Buck consultants says the HR department will become real-time “cleaners” (i.e., “the Wolf” from “Pulp Fiction”) — training on the fly, concierge/networking solutions, performance coaching, leadership development, etc.

5. “Internal marketing” role will evolve to include social marketing coordination and brand ownership

Experts foresee outside talent “buying” into the brand (the company) to potentially work in the organization. Talent management would then become real-time and truly global with free agents making a comeback (the loyalty paradigm says that a new talent approach is desperately needed).
