As the new year begins, employers across the nation are aiming to recruit and retain top talent to help their business grow. Some employers, of course, are doing a better job than others.
Now in its ninth edition, Glassdoor’s 2017 “Best Places to Work” list is based on employee-submitted reviews collected since November 2015. To be eligible, an organization needed to receive at least 75 employee reviews over the past year.

25. Akamai
Moving up six spots this year, the Massachusetts-based content delivery network and cloud services provider prizes its employees and makes every effort to engage. “Curiosity is encouraged, expanding views are encouraged,” one worker says. “There is a lot to learn and a lot of really smart people to help you.”
24. Concur
Another employer that made a bit of a leap from last year — up from No. 49 — the cloud-based travel company lives up to its promise of helping employees to better their future. “Really [does] live up to letting you design your own future and allow you to stretch your innovative capabilities and encourage in-going learning and improvement,” one employee praises.
23. DocuSign
The electronic signature tech company missed the list the past few years, but stepped up from its No. 37 spot in 2014. Some of the company’s pros employees praise include: a well-organized management that “wants to see you succeed,” as well as a “great workplace environment with the ability to have a life outside of the office.”
22. Memorial Sloan Kettering
The cancer center is the world’s oldest and largest private cancer center with highly motivated employees. Some reasons employees praise their employer include: teamwork, growth, flexible hours and “awesome” benefits.
21. Delta Air Lines
The airline carrier kept its spot from last year. “Challenging, fast-paced industry, and Delta treats employees well,” one employee says. “Good compensation and great benefits. Diverse work environment and everyone loves travel. Good opportunities to advance.”
20. Intuit
Dropping one spot from its position in 2014, the tech giant receives high praise for its employee engagement culture. “Everyone is encouraged to innovate — not just engineers,” one worker says. “It’s expected, it’s supported and we cherish the learnings — good or bad."
19. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Another culture cultivator, the religious nonprofit organization gets high marks from its workers for the culture it has. “The best part about working here is the people,” one employee says. “I have made some of my best friendships with my co-workers here. The management is also incredibly respectful, communicates openly and frequently.”
18. Forrester
In its inaugural spot, the technology and market research company is recognized for its efforts to make an inviting atmosphere. “Why have I stayed at Forrester for 15 years?” one employee asks. “The company has a soul. This is a culture of intellectual curiosity, passion, integrity and respect.”
17. Salesforce
Marking the seventh time the cloud computing company has made the list, the “onboarding process is fantastic,” says one worker. “The team is extraordinary, always ready to answer questions, assist, to do whatever it takes to get the job done.”
16. MathWorks
An American privately-held corporation that specializes in mathematical computing software has made the list on and off since 2013. “While many companies espouse guiding principles and core values, I’ve never seen a company that actually lives them the way MathWorks does,” according to one worker. “Management is both responsive and open-minded. The atmosphere is relaxed but the work expectation is top-notch.”
15. SAP
Making a 27-spot leap since 2013, the software developer is seen as an employer that cultivates its workers. “SAP is very in-touch with the reality of today’s workforce,” one reviewer notes. “Many employees have a variety of needs — SAP helps connect employees to those needs.”
14. Paylocity
Paylocity is a “company that values employees and creates a culture that allows employees to be happy and comfortable at work,” one employee says of the cloud-based payroll and human capital management software developer. “I absolutely love the culture Paylocity has welcomed me into,” ads another. “I’ve never felt more at home in a workplace environment than being a part of this company.”
13. Nestlé Purina PetCare
Another supporter of employee development, “I absolutely love coming to work for NPPC every day,” one worker says. “The culture is second to none and over the years my work team has become like family. My immediate management and department leadership are both supportive and engaged in development and employee satisfaction,” they say of the pet supplied manufacturer.
12. Clorox
The Oakland, Calif.-based manufacturer of consumer products makes its debut on the list as No. 12. One worker says of the employer: “strong culture of training and rotation encourages development in people and keeps things interesting.”
11. McKinsey & Company
The consulting group is praised for its effort to develop employees. “McKinsey invests in its people’s professional development more than any other company in the management consulting industry and possibly also across industries,” one worker notes. “At McKinsey, you will continuously build your capabilities and toolkit through formal training, on-the-job training, coaching and mentorship.”
10. Power Home Remodeling
Marking its second time on the list, the home exterior remodeling company moved up five positions to the No. 10 slot this year. And employees love the culture. “In my humbling five years of professional life, Power is the first company I’ve had the pleasure of working for in which I feel everyone around me wishes to see me succeed,” one worker says. “From VPs to managers to coworkers, I get the support I need to perform at the highest level.”
9. Adobe
The computer software titan makes its sixth spot on the list, moving from spot No. 19 last year. “Get real experience, never bored on the job, invested in each employee to make them better,” one employee said of working at Adobe.
8. LinkedIn
For its 5th year in a row on the list, the social media giant moved down two spots since last year. Employees laud the company’s “great culture,” “good benefits” and “best CEO.”
7. In-N-Out Burger
The regional fast food chain is famous for its secret menu, and with no surprise, its workers praise the employers’ business strategy. Flexible working hours, good salary, insurance options for part time associates, 401(k), free meal in a working shift and room for advancement within the company are some of the many reasons employees love In-N-Out.
6. Fast Enterprises
For four years, the software developer has remained in the top 10 of this list. The benefits packages top the lists of many workers, with one noting, “FAST does a great job of taking care of their employees. The salary and benefits packages are great, especially for recent college grads. Healthcare is mostly employer-paid.”
5. World Wide Technology
In its second year on the list, the systems integration company is recognized for its office culture. “Completely awesome place to work,” one worker writes. “The best part of WWT is the people and culture. They are who they say they are. It is that simple. From the top down, it is impressive how this company is run and attracts great people.”
4. Google
The tech titan is known in Silicon Valley for its work culture. With nine years on the list, and seven years in the top 10, it’s no surprise workers rave about their employer. “You can’t find a more well-regarded company that actually deserves the hype it gets,” one employee says. “You’ll work on cutting edge projects/solve important issues that impact your community and the world.”
3. Boston Consulting Group
The global management consulting firm has been in the top 10 of the list seven out of the eight times it’s been tapped. “I'm a true believer that for many, BCG is the best consulting firm out there,” one worker says. “Opens unbelievable opportunities and fosters incredible professional growth while still remaining personal.”
2. Facebook
The social media mammoth many times over has been praised for its work ethics. It has been in the No. 1 position twice before, and is lauded for the company’s leadership. “I’m a 55-year-old working in a company where the average age is 28, and I’ve never been happier,” one worker says. “I have always wanted to work in a company where I wasn’t the proverbial square peg, and after nearly 30 years in the work force, I believe that I have found the company that complements my ideology for how a company should operate.”
1. Bain & Company
Since this list’s creation, the management consulting firm has never dropped out of the top five. It has a 4.8 rating with a CEO approval rating of 99%. Employees rave about the culture and experiences Bain provides.
“Bain will most likely be the best company I will ever work for,” says one employee. “From the compensation, benefits (and snacks) to the quality of my colleagues (both intellectually and interpersonally) and the supportive culture, I have not seen anything that has come close to comparing in my short career thus far.”
