The Supreme Court announced last week that it would review cases involving the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and the validity of California’s Proposition 8.
Several district courts already have ruled DOMA unconstitutional. The federal law prevents same-sex married couples from filing joint tax returns, which can lessen tax burdens, and prevents the surviving spouse in a same-sex marriage from collecting Social Security survivor benefits.
