One-third of organizations have already signed up college students to begin working before or after their graduation, according to the Society for Human Resource Management’s Hiring of 2015 College Graduates survey. The following guidelines provide some tips and insight when screening new applicants who have just collected their bachelor degrees.

Effective methods in generating viable job candidates

According to organizations that have actively recruited new college graduates, the most effective recruitment methods include:


Collaborating with colleges and universities (68%);
Employee referrals (31%);
Organization’s corporate career Web site (25%);
Social networking Web sites (23%).

Offer the benefits that college graduates value most in a job

Young job seekers ranked pay as their top job priority, tied with career advancement opportunities (both 59%). This was followed by training (50%), meaningful work (44%), organizational culture (35%) and work/life balance (34%).


“Even if companies are unable to offer competitive compensation packages, professional development and workplace flexibility are attractive alternatives for college graduates,” said Evren Esen, director of survey programs at SHRM.

Desired skills to search out

According to the survey, a number of skills were found lacking by 2015 college graduates. Some of the skills employers should hone in to when sifting through applications include:


Professionalism/work ethic (43%);
Writing in English (e.g., grammar and spelling) (29%);
Relationship building/soft skills (29%);
Written communications (26%);
Critical thinking/problem solving (26%).

Provide training for college graduates

In an effort to overcome recruiting difficulties for highly skilled positions, almost one-half of employers (46%) offer training programs for recent graduates with limited work experience.

Streamline the process

While the economy was in the earlier days of recovery, the recruitment of college graduates was less common. But as the economy has grown, HR professionals should begin exploring the use of social media as a means of recruiting, along with technological improvements to simplify the hiring process.
