Shutdown countdown is on

As I sit writing this post, there are about 36 hours left for the squabbling children also known as our congressional lawmakers to make a deal to keep our nation’s government funded and operating.

Here in the nation’s capital, there are three things are guaranteed to put DCers on edge: the slightest hint of snow, traffic, and the fits and starts of the federal government. Thus, the mood here this week — usually light and fun this time of year, as it’s time for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival — has been very anxious and uncertain.

As a lifelong D.C.-area resident, I know more than a few federal workers who won’t get paid if the government does indeed shut down at midnight Friday. And the implications for those folks and their families is just the tip of an iceberg of consequences if Congress doesn’t get this thing figured out.

Here’s a sampling of ways life in DC and all around the country will be affected in the event of a government shutdown. No small potatoes, I say.
