There’s value in getting together — it just doesn’t always equate with efficiency or productivity. It’s about creating a corporate culture or building trust among colleagues.

You may feel especially unproductive and distracted when you first return to the office. But remember what the office is for: strengthening social ties, some of which may have gotten overly transactional over the past year.

Unlike past recessions, millions abruptly left the workforce as soon as the pandemic began and are still not seeking employment.

Telehealth served as a lifeline for many during the pandemic, ramping up from a minority share of office visits to a majority, at least for a while. Still, it cannot replace hands-on care for some conditions.

"We call it the “Donut Effect.” The places losing the most people are centers of big cities," says Nicholas Bloom, a Stanford University economist.

The stronger pace of hiring suggests firms are having greater success filling open positions as the removal of pandemic-related restrictions and increased social activity spurs demand.

Many low-paid workers without much retirement savings found themselves forced out of their jobs with little prospect of finding employment again. Retiring before the full retirement age will result in a cut in their Social Security benefits, by as much as 30%.

Advocates for the diversity business case usually cite ongoing research from consultant McKinsey that has found that companies with more diverse leadership are more likely to outperform the profitability of those that are the least diverse.

Still both Black and Hispanic unemployment levels remain elevated compared to the overall jobless rate.

Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Cailee Olson said in an emailed statement that the company is a “longtime supporter of the LGBTQ+ community.”
