10 best cities for STEM professionals

Whether someone has just graduated or wants to leave their current employer, this may be one of the best times in recent U.S. history to find a job — especially if it’s a job in science, technology, engineering and math.

There are over 8 million STEM jobs in the U.S., and the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates this number will only grow by 10.5% between 2020 and 2030. This is good news for those interested in the industry, since STEM professionals earn more than double the national median annual wage, making nearly $90,000.

Although STEM is expected to grow nationwide, there are cities that will boast more opportunities than others. Personal finance website WalletHub analyzed several sets of metrics, scoring cities out of 100 to find the best locations for STEM professionals to live and work.

“The best job markets for STEM professionals were determined by comparing the 100 most populated U.S. metro areas across three categories: professional opportunities, STEM-friendliness and quality of life,” says Jill Gonzalez, an analyst at WalletHub. “The biggest factors within these categories were the number of job openings for STEM graduates, the share of the workforce in STEM and STEM employment growth.”

WalletHub also factored in local housing affordability, recreational opportunities and family friendliness, as well as the gap between men and women studying STEM in college or currently in STEM jobs.
