Telehealth provider MeMD has teamed up with the Healthy Transportation Foundation, a national not-for-profit that supports the health and well-being of truck drivers, in order to provide these employees with on-demand virtual healthcare.

The use of telemedicine has surged as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the last week of March 2020 alone, there was a 154% increase in telehealth visits compared with the same period in 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Seventy-two percent of employers offer a telemedicine benefit, according to the Society for Human Resource Management.

The partnership is part of the HTF’s Shift into Better Health program, which is aimed at getting professional truck drivers better healthcare. As part of this program, drivers will have access to MeMD’s urgent care and virtual primary care resources.

Truck drivers typically work hours outside of the normal nine to five workday, as a result, these employees don’t always have regular access to the healthcare solutions they need. As part of the MeMD program drivers will receive 24/7 access to medical care through their computer, mobile app or phone. This includes nights, weekends and holidays.

“This is a meaningful partnership that extends the value of our Shift Into Better Health campaign, enabling HTF to improve access to care for professional drivers by offering virtual telehealth consults that can be accessed on and off the road,” Jon Slaughter, CEO of the Healthy Transportation Foundation, said in a release.

As part of this partnership HFT wants to prioritize any chronic illnesses that drivers may be facing, such as diabetes and obesity. Over 60% of truck drivers are obease and over 60% suffer from diabetes, according to HFT data. Additionally, chronic conditions can be a large healthcare burden for employers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The MeMD program will help drivers prioritize their care and focus on getting routine screenings as well as early detection and preventive health services.

“This translates into better management for chronic disease while curbing healthcare costs,” Slaughter says. “As a result, we expect to contribute to improved individual health, employee productivity and satisfaction. MeMD is an ideal complement to our free health coach assistance and lifestyle change programs.”
