Here's how a pet-friendly workplace benefits employees:
1. Pets encourage
They serve as a natural conversation starter, helping colleagues connect — even those who rarely spoke before. We've noticed the same dynamic at Kormotech.
2. Pets help reduce stress and tension
Stroking a dog or cat can ease anxiety, while a short walk offers a mental reset and energy boost. During the full-scale war in Ukraine, many of our employees found emotional support in their pets. Taking care of them helps to prevent isolation and maintain normal daily activities.
3. Reduced absenteeism
Employees feel more at ease knowing their pets are with them, eliminating concerns about leaving them alone or staying late at work. Lower stress levels also help prevent burnout, leading to fewer instances of unpaid leave.
4. Stronger loyalty and engagement
When a company allows employees to bring pets to the office, it demonstrates that
How to make your office pet-friendly
Having pets in the office is not just for fun — it's about creating a pet-friendly culture that considers both the comfort of employees and their pets. Twelve years ago, the idea of having animals in offices was considered unusual in Ukraine. To challenge any preconceptions people had, we introduced the "Take Your Dog to Work" initiative in 2013, which has since been adopted by over 500 companies nationwide.
To help businesses permanently implement a dog-friendly approach, we launched the Paws in the Office project and developed a guide on setting up a pet-friendly workspace. More than 200 companies have benefited from this guide. Here are the key recommendations:
1. Discuss the topic with all colleagues
Some employees may have allergies or fears of animals. In such cases, create a pet-free workspace for them. It's also important to foster an open communication culture, so everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts on the new policy.
2. Get approval from your landlord
Many landlords are open to allowing pets if they understand that animals will be monitored.
3. Prepare the environment
Ensure that the workspace is free of any potential hazards for pets, such as exposed wires or hazardous items. Keep personal belongings off the floor and make sure the kitchen is free of food scraps.

4. Ensure pet safety
Verify that all pets coming into the office have received their mandatory vaccinations for infectious diseases, including leptospirosis and rabies, which can be harmful to humans.
5. Designate areas for pets
Provide accessible water at all times and a dedicated food bowl for each pet. Place a bed or blanket near the owner's desk for the pet to rest. Create quiet areas where pets can be separated if needed.
6. Establish shared guidelines for pets and employees
Consider implementing a pet booking system requiring advance registration to manage the number of animals in the office.
7. Introduce pets to the office gradually
Advise employees on how to help their pets adjust. For example, before bringing a dog in, it's recommended to do a trial visit on a weekend or after working hours when the office is quiet. Ask colleagues to avoid rushing to greet the new dog and instead wait for the dog to show interest in interacting.
8. Stock essential pet care supplies
Ensure the office is equipped with a pet first-aid kit, waste bags, wipes for cleaning paws after walks and cleaning supplies for any messes. In our Lviv office, we even have a dedicated dog shower.
9. Designate pet-free areas
Establish zones where pets should not be allowed, such as production areas, labs, areas with sensitive equipment and the kitchen.
Creating a pet-friendly office is a thoughtful step that requires detailed planning and effort, but it will enhance employee well-being, boost productivity and increase engagement at work.
