As senior benefits director, Americas, at Medtronic, Denise King has continually relied on, and embraced, technology to carefully and thoughtfully communicate benefits information and changes to employees.

Since 2011, she has partnered with Jellyvision to offer Alex® — an interactive benefits communication platform that explains everything from open enrollment to retirement benefits — to Medtronic employees.

But this year that technology became even more important when Medtronic acquired Covidien — and had to help integrate and onboard 13,000 newly acquired employees. As a way to harmonize Medtronic and Covidien benefits for nearly 38,000 employees, King continued to rely on Alex. She also helped organize a plan that broke employees into groups with separate open enrollment windows so the benefits team could better focus on helping and supporting all employees.

Her efforts have paid off: King is the recipient of a Dig|Benefits Technology Innovator Award, a program designed to recognize visionaries who are driving technology innovation in the employee benefits space. Winners will be honored at the Dig|Benefits conference May 19-20 in Austin, Tex.

“Technology done right will continue to offer employees relevant, personalized communication that can also be used to engage with family members and benefit decision-makers in a household,” she says.

And she says she sees technology growing even more vital in benefits in the years to come.

“We hope to see increasingly easier and more affordable access to healthcare through options like online and virtual care,” King says.
